Paula Moi

Paula Moi formed in Brazil in 1985 with singer Paula Toller, bassist Lan Lanh, and guitarist Luiz Stein. Their song 'Fim de Tarde' became a hit the following year, pulling them into wider recognition with its quiet, reflective quality. They put out albums like Pedra Azul in 1989 and Paraíso Perdido in 1992, keeping to a melodic, atmospheric sound that felt personal rather than aimed at the charts.

In the mid-1990s, Toller's public comments about environmental activism drew some criticism from listeners who preferred the music stay separate from politics. The band kept working, though, and by 2000 they were collaborating with electronic producer DJ Patife on Beat Acelerado, which shifted toward more dance-oriented material. Their catalog holds a steady place in Brazilian pop, less as a dramatic story than as a consistent thread of melodic songwriting.
