Paulista came out of São Paulo in the late 1990s with a sound that mixed funk, hip-hop, and samba. Their breakout was 'Mega-Sena,' a song that became a kind of national anthem for a while, driven by Rogério Flausino's vocals. They put out albums like 'Paulista' in 1999 and 'É Só Começar' in 2001.
In 2001, there was a plagiarism accusation about the melody of 'Mega-Sena,' which they eventually resolved. The band's original lineup included João Marcello Bôscoli on guitar, Rodrigo Santos on guitar, Ricardo Feltrin on bass, and Yan Latorre on drums, with Flausino as the consistent frontman.
They kept releasing records through the 2000s, including 'Prá Curtir' in 2004 and a compilation called '10 Anos' in 2009. Another track people remember is 'Que Garota É Essa.' The music had an energetic, live-show feel that connected with Brazilian audiences.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
