That song, from his debut album "Canções Para Voar," became an instant classic with its haunting melody and poetic lyrics about longing and the cosmos. He was born into a humble family in rural Brazil, and early on drew inspiration from samba and bossa nova.
His introverted nature and unconventional style sometimes drew criticism, but he kept working. He released several other albums, including "Canções Perdidas" in 1995 and "O Tempo e o Vento" in 2005. Another well-known song of his is "Descansarei."
He has collaborated with artists like Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, and Maria Bethânia. His band has included musicians such as Júlio Moura on bass and Maurício Maestro on keyboards.
