Paulo Fonda

Paulo Fonda formed in Melbourne in the early 2000s around brothers Luke and Michael Fonda. Their early sound had a raw, experimental quality that drew from post-punk and electronic music, which didn't immediately connect with mainstream critics. They kept working at it, though, and by 2008 they released the album 'Indole,' which gave them a clearer direction. The title track became a focal point for the band, pairing Luke Fonda's distinctive vocals with driving rhythms.

After 'Indole,' they put out albums like 'The Shape of Things' in 2011 and 'The Shadowed Man' in 2014, each showing a willingness to shift between ambient textures and more introspective folk elements. Other songs from that period, like 'Passados Amargos' and 'Quero Ir Além,' reflect that same exploratory approach. In 2014, a music video for 'The Unseen' stirred some debate over artistic expression, though the band kept moving forward with releases like 'Echoes of the Void' in 2017 and 'Visions' in 2020.

The lineup settled with Luke Fonda on vocals and guitar, Michael on bass, Alex Leu on drums, and Emily Breeze handling keyboards and vocals. Their music never really fit a single genre, which made them hard to categorize but gave them a dedicated following. They're one of those groups where the work itself, songs like 'Você É Muito Mais' from their catalog, matters more than any grand narrative about their place in music.
