The band's sound pulled from samba, reggae, and African rhythms, built on a foundation of percussion and polyphonic vocals. Their debut album 'Pé de Coco' came out in 1995, followed by 'Mandala' in 1998.
Carlinhos Brown wrote most of the material, with lyrics that touched on social justice and everyday life. The track 'Seu Jeito' shows their approach: percussive grooves supporting layered vocals. Other core members included Marcio Vitor on vocals and guitar and Sergio Rocha on bass.
Their music caught attention outside Brazil, leading to work with artists like Shakira, Santana, and Manu Chao. The band's style, which mixed traditional elements with a modern feel, sometimes drew questions from purists, but they kept at it through the '90s.
