Pe. Nilso is a Catholic priest from Brazil who also writes and performs rock music. Born Nilso de Oliveira in 1957, he grew up in the countryside of São Paulo and was ordained in 1984. He didn't leave music behind after becoming a priest, instead starting to compose rock songs that dealt with faith and other human themes.
His 1997 song "Ele É o Alpha" became a hit but also drew criticism from some conservative Catholic groups who found its lyrics too worldly. He kept making music anyway, with albums like "Pedra Angular" in 1995 and "O Caminho" in 1999. Other songs include "Alegria de minh'alma" and "No Peito de Jesus."
His work blends rock with Brazilian folk and pop elements. The music has found listeners beyond strictly religious audiences, though it sometimes stirred debate within the church community about how faith and contemporary sounds mix.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
