Peabo Bryson was born in Greenville, South Carolina in 1951. He started singing in church choirs and local talent shows before signing with Bang Records in the early 1970s. His self-titled debut album came out in 1976, though it took a few more years for his career to really find its footing.
In the 1980s, Bryson had a string of hits that leaned into his smooth vocal style. Songs like 'If Ever You're In My Arms Again' and 'Tonight I Celebrate My Love' became R&B radio staples. He also recorded duets with Roberta Flack and Regina Belle during this period.
Bryson is probably best known to wider audiences for his work on Disney film songs. He sang 'Beauty and the Beast' with Celine Dion and 'A Whole New World' with Regina Belle, both of which won Academy Awards. These recordings brought his voice to listeners who might not have heard his earlier R&B material.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
