Archive material and source history
Pedro Leonardo started out in Goiânia, playing local bars and rodeos before putting out his first album in 1995. He was working in sertanejo, but by the early 2000s he'd begun mixing in funk rhythms, which gave him the track 'Funknejo' and eventually the name for that hybrid style.
He kept recording through the 2000s, with albums like 'Temporal' in 2004 and 'Ao Vivo em Goiânia' a couple years later. Other songs from that period include 'Acelerou o Coração' and 'Mesa de Bar'.
There were critics who didn't care for the funk-sertanejo blend, calling it a commercial move more than an artistic one. He kept at it anyway, and the sound found an audience. Later on he did an acoustic version of the style on 'Funknejo Acústico' in 2011.
