Pelican formed in Schaumburg, Illinois in 1998 with guitarists Trevor de Brauw and Laurent Schroeder-Lebec, bassist Bryan Herweg, and drummer Larry Herweg. They started with an instrumental approach, releasing their debut EP 'Australasia' in 1999. Their sound built on heavy riffs and atmospheric layers without vocals, which set them apart in what people sometimes called post-metal.
After drummer Larry Herweg died in a car accident in 2006, the band continued with Dave Castro. They put out 'The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw,' which got attention for its long, immersive tracks. Songs like 'Final Breath' showed how they could build tension through repetition and shifting dynamics rather than traditional song structures.
They've sometimes been grouped with bands labeled as Christian metal, which they've denied. Mostly they've just kept making music that leans into texture and mood over aggression or speed, sticking to their instrumental format through lineup changes and different record labels.
