Pena Branca e Xavantinho were a Brazilian folk duo from the northeastern sertão region. Pena Branca (João Batista Carreiro) sang and wrote lyrics, while Xavantinho (Manuel Rodrigues da Silva) played guitar and arranged their music. They met at a São Paulo festival in 1964 and began performing together.
Their songs like "Cuitelinho" and "Poeira" often dealt with rural life and social themes. They put out more than twenty albums over their career.
Xavantinho's guitar work drew from traditional instruments, and Pena Branca's voice had a raw, emotional quality that fit their material. Other songs people remember include "Velha Morada" and "Menina Bonita."
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
