Pepeu Gonçalves came up in Rio de Janeiro, where he started his first band, Os Cariocas, in the mid-1970s. He later went solo, and in 1985 his song 'Bâmo Bate Pata' became a major hit in Brazil.
His recordings from that period include albums like 'A Origem do Samba' from 1986 and 'Sambas e Canções' from 1989. Other songs in his catalog, such as 'Ah, Meu Rio Grande' and 'Alma de Bicho,' reflect his grounding in samba and regional Brazilian styles.
He worked with musicians like guitarist Marcos Sacramento, bassist Pedrinho, and drummer Robertinho Silva. These players helped shape the sound of his recordings and live performances throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
