Permanent Me formed in 2010 around lead vocalist and songwriter Emily Lewis, with guitarist Michael Smith, bassist Ethan Jones, and drummer Jayden Davis. They started playing local clubs in Los Angeles, though early recordings were criticized for sounding unpolished. The band kept working on their material, which tended toward introspective lyrics and soulful melodies.
In 2014 they released their debut album, 'The Weight of Your Absence.' It included the song 'Until You Leave,' which got some attention for its emotional delivery and Lewis's vocals. The album had a mix of quieter ballads and more energetic rock tracks, and it helped them book festival slots and build a following. Other songs from that period include '4 Am' and 'Dead To You.'
As they gained more visibility, Lewis's openness about mental health struggles became part of the conversation around the band. Their music continued to draw on personal themes, with songs like 'Allison' and 'Ambient And Grey' reflecting that inward focus.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
