Perna Longa formed in the mid-1980s when Alexandre Pimentel and Ronaldo Bastos started making music together. They worked outside the mainstream for a while, with Pimentel handling vocals and guitar while Bastos played bass and sang backup. Their first album came out in 1985, simply called "Perna Longa."
Their song "O Coelho de Sevilha" became their most recognizable track, a satirical piece about Brazil's political landscape that drew both fans and critics. The duo's lyrics often touched on social issues and what some considered taboo topics, which kept them in conversations beyond just music circles.
Other songs like "Alguém Pra Se Orgulhar" and "O Que Está Havendo Comigo" show their range, mixing rock, samba, and Brazilian folk elements into something that felt distinct from what was popular at the time. Their music got played on radio stations and was covered by other artists, though they never seemed particularly interested in chasing commercial success.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
