Perrela formed in São Paulo's Jardim Romano neighborhood, started by Paulo César and Rafael Ribeiro. The name means "little stone," which they've said reflects their determination. Their music pulls from samba and funk, mixing in hip-hop and soul elements, with lyrics that often address social issues directly.
One of their better-known tracks is "Quilombo 011," a song that references the historical settlements where enslaved Africans found refuge in Brazil. Other songs like "Cantor de RnB" and "Dissculpa" show their range across different rhythms while keeping their lyrical focus on community and resistance.
They've released several albums since starting out, including their self-titled debut in 2008 and later records like "Em Cada Canto Um Quilombo" in 2011. The group includes João Xaropinho on drums, André Abraão on guitar, and Douglas dos Santos on percussion alongside the founders.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
