Pete "El Conde" Rodríguez was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1934. He moved to New York City in 1956, where he joined Orquesta Harlow and began performing salsa music professionally.
His solo career took off with the 1967 album "Catalina La O," whose title track became one of his most recognizable songs. Other popular recordings include "Cuando Florezcan Las Amapolas" and "Micaela."
Rodríguez faced personal difficulties during his career, including a 1971 arrest for drug possession that led to a prison sentence. He continued recording music after his release, with albums like "El Conde" and "Los Virtuosos del Ritmo" appearing in the following years.
