Peter, Paul and Mary formed in 1961 with Peter Yarrow, Paul Stookey, and Mary Travers. Their first album came out the following year, and it included 'If I Had a Hammer,' which helped them find an audience. They worked mostly with acoustic instruments and close harmonies, drawing from folk traditions and the protest songs that were circulating at the time.
Songs like 'Blowing In the Wind' and 'All My Trials' became part of their set, and they were known for a sound that felt both gentle and direct. They stayed active through the 1960s, putting out records like 'Moving' and 'In the Wind.' Mary Travers died in 2009.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
