Archive material and source history

Peter Wolf was born Vladimir Schifrin in Budapest in the late 1920s. He grew up with classical piano lessons and the sounds of gypsy music around him.

In 1933, he composed what became known as the "Hungarian Suicide Song," a ballad called "Gloomy Sunday." The lyrics were written by László Jávor. The song's reputation for being linked to suicides led some governments to ban it.

Wolf wrote other songs too, including "I Need You Tonight" and "Lights Out." His work has been recorded by Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, and Ray Charles. He performed early on with the Hungaria Trio, which included violinist Ferenc Weisz and pianist Zoltán Lengyel, and later worked with Benny Goodman.
