Pharmacist

Pharmacist formed in Memphis in the early 1990s around vocalist and guitarist Matt Hill. Their sound mixed rock, blues, and hip-hop in ways that didn't fit neatly into industry categories. The band's lineup shifted over time, with players like bassist Tim Whitsett, drummer Craig Orr, and guitarist Scott Taylor coming through.

They released albums including "South of Heaven," "Between the Rich and the Poor," and "The Fix Is In." Their 2003 song "North Memphis" became something of an underground anthem, drawing attention for its unvarnished look at city life. The track appears on their later work.

Pharmacist worked with poets and other artists outside music, which gave their material a different texture. They stayed active through the 2000s, with Hill as the consistent presence. The band's recordings have a raw, unpolished quality that appealed to listeners tired of more commercial sounds.
