Ph.D. was a synth-pop band formed in 1981 by Simon Phillips, Tony Hymas, and Jim Diamond. Phillips had drummed for Pete Townsend and Tears for Fears before the group started. Diamond handled vocals and wrote much of their material, including their best-known track, "I Won't Let You Down."
That song became their signature, a synth-driven piece with Diamond's earnest vocal delivery. They put out several albums in the early 1980s, including "Ph.D." in 1981 and "Is It Safe?" the following year. Other songs like "Poor City" and "Radio To On" showed their blend of keyboards and pop hooks.
Diamond left the band in 1986, and Ph.D. didn't continue much longer after that. Their music, particularly "I Won't Let You Down," still gets played on 80s stations and synth-pop playlists.
