Editor's note

Phil Collins, from Genesis drums to solo pop

The drummer turned frontman whose 80s hits still echo in movies and memory.

For the full Collins mix, start with 'In The Air Tonight' and 'No Son Of Mine.' They bookend his shift from moody breakup songs to bigger, story-driven singles.

You can't talk about 80s pop without 'In The Air Tonight' - that drum fill alone made it a standard. 'Another Day In Paradise' took a serious turn on homelessness and still gets radio play. Even his film work like 'You'll Be In My Heart' from Tarzan shows how his voice settled into family soundtracks.

He joined Genesis as their drummer in 1970, then stepped out with his solo debut 'Face Value' in 1981. Health issues eventually slowed his touring, and he retired from the road in 2016, the same year he put out 'Not Dead Yet'.
