Phil Coulter

Phil Coulter was born in Derry, Northern Ireland, in 1942. He started out in the 1960s with a band called The Showband Show before going solo. His song 'The Town I Loved So Well' came out in 1968 and became a standard in Irish music, known for its reflective tone about his hometown. Other songs like 'Donegal Danny' and 'Ellis Island' also found an audience, often touching on themes of place and memory.

He wrote and performed for decades, with albums like 'Coulter' in 1967 and 'Tranquility' in 1974. His work stayed rooted in folk and ballad traditions, avoiding much of the flashier trends in popular music. Coulter's voice and piano playing gave his recordings a straightforward, unadorned quality that suited the material.
