Archive material and source history
Philosopher Kings came out of Los Angeles in the late 1980s, mixing alternative rock with funk and soul. Their frontman was Clay Tarver, and they put out three albums in the 1990s: Positivity in 1992, The Universe Inside in 1994, and Philosoulphication in 1996. Songs like All to Myself and Cant Get My Mind Around You show their knack for blending introspective lyrics with catchy, groove-driven music.
Tarver pushed back, saying it was a personal song about his own struggles with depression. That kind of tension between their experimental sound and more straightforward topics popped up across their work.
They broke up in 1998, but their records still turn up in films and TV shows now and then. The band included Clay Tarver on vocals and guitar, Alex Alimoglu on bass, and John Herrera on drums.
