Piegas formed in 1988 with Cristiana Carvalho on vocals, Rosana Fiengo on guitar, Maria Eugenia on bass, and Ana Karan on drums. Their self-titled debut came out in 1990, but it was their 1992 album 'Regina Dasdores' that really put them on the map.
That album's title track became their calling card, a song that managed to feel both raw and catchy. The band's sound pulled from punk energy but had enough pop sensibility to reach beyond just that scene.
They kept recording through the mid-90s, putting out 'Agente Secreto' in 1994 and 'Nação Dos Esquisitos' in 1996. Their lyrics often dealt with themes of female empowerment and social issues, which sometimes drew criticism from more conservative corners of Brazilian culture.
