Pier 76 formed in 1984 in São Paulo, with Celso Fernandes on vocals, Mikaela Cohen on guitar, Alexandre O'Grady on bass, and Edson Spinelli on drums. They took their name from a pier in the city's port area, which suited their bohemian, outsider stance. Their sound mixed rock, punk, and experimental music in a way that didn't fit neatly into any category.
Their debut album came out in 1986, titled 'Minha Mãe Falou Para Eu Parar de Andar Pelado.' The title track became an anthem for nonconformists, though its audacious lyrics and their unconventional stage shows drew both praise and condemnation. They kept releasing albums through the 1990s and early 2000s, like 'A Barca da Ilusão' in 1994 and 'Noite dos Vampiros' in 2000, with their music growing more experimental over time.
Other songs from their catalog include 'Achados e Perdidos,' 'Areia Verde,' 'Califórnia Style (The Mula's Song),' and 'Dukipensei.' Their output became more sporadic in the 2000s, though they did reunite for a special concert in 2010.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
