Pills & Tabet formed in the Belleville neighborhood of Paris in the mid-1990s, with Mathias Malzieu on vocals, Nicolas Gacon on guitar, Guillaume Loizeau on bass, and Christophe Lessard on drums. They released four studio albums between 1998 and 2005, including their self-titled debut and the 2000 album named for their most recognizable song, "27, rue des Acacias."
That track became something of an anthem, though their catalog includes other songs like "Amoureux d'une femme nue" and "Couchés dans le foin" that share its jangly guitar sound and melancholic, introspective lyrics. Their music drew from French chanson and indie rock, with Malzieu's writing often touching on love and loss.
While they faced some criticism for their darker lyrical themes and dealt with personal challenges, the band kept making records through the early 2000s. Their final album, "Les Matins Blancs," came out in 2005.
