Pinduca formed in Belém, Pará in 1978, led by Luiz Pardal on vocals, guitar, and cavaquinho. The band played carimbó, a rhythm with roots in the quilombola communities of northern Brazil. Their 1982 debut album 'Trem do Carimbó' included the track 'Dança do Carimbó,' which became widely popular and helped bring the regional sound to a national audience.
Some traditionalists criticized Pinduca for modernizing carimbó with electric instruments, but Pardal maintained they were adapting the form while keeping its essence. The band's recordings include songs like 'Carimbó do Socó,' 'Carimbó do Macaco,' and 'Sinhá Pureza' that showcase their energetic percussion and Pardal's vocal style.
Other members included Manuel Souza on drums, Manoel Bezerra on bass, João Batista on keyboards, and Walmir Soares on saxophone. They released several albums through the 1980s and early 1990s, including 'Dança do Carimbó' in 1985 and 'Carimbó do Norte' in 1991.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
