Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born in 1840 in Votkinsk, Russia. He studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory after leaving civil service work. In 1875, he was commissioned to write the score for a ballet based on the German fairy tale 'Swan Lake.'
His music for 'Swan Lake' includes the recognizable 'Dance of the Little Swans.' Among his other works are 'The Nutcracker' from 1892, the opera 'Eugene Onegin' from 1879, and his 'Symphony No. 6' from 1893. He died in 1893.
