Background notes

Archive material and source history

Pirates of the Mississippi formed in the late 1950s around frontman Johnny 'Hurricane' Carter, playing a mix of rockabilly and ballads that found an audience in the Deep South. Their sound was raw and their live shows had some energy, but their lyrics sometimes pushed against what was considered acceptable at the time.

In 1963 they put out a single called '1959' that got some national attention. They followed it with albums like 'Bayou Fever' and 'Creole Crossroads' through the 1960s. Songs like 'Weakness For The Weekend' and 'Biggest Broken Heart In Tennessee' show the kind of material they were working with.

Carter had some personal troubles that affected the band, including a drug possession arrest in 1968 that led to a break. They got back together in the early 1970s and kept playing, but things weren't quite the same.
