Piu Piu de Marapendi

Piu Piu de Marapendi came together in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1990s, mixing samba and pagode with hip-hop rhythms. Their 1999 self-titled debut introduced a sound that felt both familiar and fresh, built around Marcelinho Moreira's lead vocals and a lineup that included Mário Jorge on drums, Alexandre "Xandão" Moreira on bass, Jefferson "Jeffinho" Lima on keyboards, and Wallace "Loco" Ferreira on saxophone.

In 2002, the single "Eu Hoje Vou Me Dar Bem" became a hit, though it also brought accusations of plagiarism. The song stuck around anyway, joined by other tracks like "Vou Parar de Beber" and "Ela Foi Embora" that kept their sound in rotation at parties and on radio. They followed with albums like "Encontro de Gigantes" in 2004 and "Samba, Pagode e Hip-Hop" in 2006, staying active through 2008's "O Baile do Piu Piu."

Their catalog includes the playful "Rato de Praia" and the more narrative "Samba Enredo da História da Invenção do Rádio," showing a range within their upbeat style. The group's music drew from Rio's street energy without trying to reinvent it, and for a stretch in the 2000s, they were a reliable presence in Brazil's pop landscape.
