Planks formed in Berlin around the early 2010s, playing electro-acoustic music that mixed acoustic instruments with electronic textures. Their lineup included Jonas Plank on vocals and guitar, Sophia Rader on violin, Elias Meyer on piano and synthesizers, and Felix Schmidt on bass. Their debut album 'Bliss in All Sorrows Found' came out in 2014, followed by 'Veiled in Shadows' in 2017 and 'Echoes of a Distant Shore' in 2020.
Their songs like 'Bliss in All Sorrows Found' and 'Into Lifeless Embrace' often carried a somber, atmospheric quality. Jonas Plank has spoken about dealing with mental health issues, particularly during the making of 'Veiled in Shadows'. In 2016, the band got into a copyright dispute over sampling a classical piece, which stirred some discussion about artistic boundaries.
They developed a following for their moody, layered sound, though they've remained somewhat under the radar compared to more mainstream acts. Their music doesn't really fit neatly into one genre, sitting somewhere between ambient, folk, and electronic.
