Plano Inclinado formed in Salvador, Bahia in 1989, with Roberto Barreto on vocals, Vitor Santana on guitar, Célio Oliveira on keyboards, and Ricardo Moura on drums. They were drawn to reggae from the start, listening to Bob Marley and Peter Tosh while figuring out how to make the sound their own.
Their first album came out in 1991, self-titled like the band. One track from it, 'Abadá,' caught on quickly with its steady rhythm and direct lyrics. That song, along with others like 'Casca de Nós' and 'Seleção Natural,' helped establish them as a reggae presence in Brazil during a time when the style wasn't widespread there.
They played shows across the country and eventually abroad, sometimes sharing bills with established reggae acts like Alpha Blondy and Jimmy Cliff. The lineup shifted some after those early years, but Barreto and Santana remained from the original group.
