Poderground formed in 1993 in Corroios, a working-class neighborhood near Lisbon. Their aggressive punk sound drew from 1970s and 1980s influences, and their lyrics often addressed social injustice and political oppression.
In 1994, they released "Carta a El-Rei D.Manuel," which became a defiant anthem with its chorus "Queremos ser livres!" ("We want to be free!"). The song challenged the regime of António de Oliveira Salazar and served as a rallying cry for many. Another track, "Século XXI," appears among their notable songs.
Poderground released several albums including "Olhar o Tempo" in 1996, "Manifesto" in 1999, and "Puro Ódio" in 2003. Their music maintained a raw, confrontational edge that connected with marginalized audiences who responded to its honesty and rebellious energy.
