Poente Paz e Rodrigo came from Itabaiana, Sergipe, a town in Brazil's Sertão region. They worked as a duo, with Poente Paz handling lead vocals and acoustic guitar while Rodrigo played multiple instruments including guitar, bass, and percussion.
Their debut album 'A Volta do Sertanejo' came out in 1995, featuring the title track that would become their most recognized song. They followed it with a live recording from Salvador in 2002 and another collection of traditional material in 2010 called 'Histórias do Sertão'.
They stuck with traditional Sertanejo music even as other genres gained popularity, and 'A Volta do Sertanejo' became something of an anthem for that style's persistence. The song drew from the rhythms and stories of their home region.
