Archive material and source history
Poliéster formed in Porto Alegre in 1984 with Luciano Leães on vocals, Junior Bass Groisman on guitar, Gustavo Barbará on bass, and Beto Boy on drums. They put out their self-titled debut album the following year. Their second album, 'Luzes da Cidade' from 1987, is the one that really stuck, largely because of the song 'Mertiolate.'
That track, a ballad about unrequited love, became their calling card. It's the song people remember, though their catalog includes other work like 'O Novo' and 'São sete horas.' They kept recording through the 1990s, putting out albums like 'Alcova' and 'Geração Pop.'
Their sound pulled from rock and pop but also incorporated Brazilian rhythms, which sometimes drew criticism from purists. The lineup shifted some over time from that original four-piece. They were active into the 2000s, releasing a compilation called 'Série Platinum' in 2001.
