Polirritmia formed in Salvador, Bahia in 1997. The band included Letieres Leite on vocals and percussion, Pedro Pondé on guitar and vocals, Mario Pam on bass, and Marcos Santos on drums. They released their first album Raiz in 1999, followed by Maré Cheia in 2001.
Their 2003 album Ilu Ayê brought them wider attention. The title track became a notable song for the group, drawing from Afro-Brazilian traditions. They continued recording through the 2000s with albums like África Brasil, Samba Reggae, and Bahia Brasil.
In 2005, drummer Marcos Santos died. The band kept working afterward, releasing Só Pra Sambar in 2012 and O Canto da Nação in 2017. Their music often incorporated samba, reggae, and Candomblé rhythms.
