Portal do Sul formed in Porto Alegre in 1997 with five members: Ivan Moura on lead vocals, Giba Rodrigues on guitars, Maurício Finamore on bass, Guilherme Brandão on keyboards, and Ricardo Rosa on drums. Their sound pulls from Brazilian rhythms like samba and pagode, mixed with pop and rock.
Their 2003 album "Valeu a Noitada" gave them a national hit with the title track, which became something of an anthem. Other songs like "Na batida do coração" and "Nosso Amor é Ouro" followed a similar vein of catchy, danceable grooves.
In 2006, the band faced plagiarism accusations that were eventually dismissed. They kept recording after that, but the episode lingered in the background for a while.
