Editor's note

Prince, the Minneapolis musician who played everything

He wrote, recorded, and performed his own songs, blending funk, rock, and pop into a sound all his own.

For a quick sense of his range, listen to '1999' and 'Darling Nikki.' One's a party anthem, the other something darker, and both sound like nobody else.

Prince's music didn't fit neatly into one genre. Songs like '1999' and 'Little Red Corvette' mixed funk rhythms with rock guitar and pop hooks, and he often played all the instruments himself. That independence gave his work a singular feel, whether on the 'Purple Rain' soundtrack or later albums like 'Sign o' the Times.'

He started writing and recording his own material in the late 1970s, playing most instruments himself. The 1979 album 'Purple Rain' and its film turned him into a star, and he kept recording steadily through the 1990s and beyond, even changing his name to a symbol for a while.

Archive material and source history

Prince Rogers Nelson was born in Minneapolis in 1958. He started playing music early, picking up influences from James Brown, Sly Stone, and Jimi Hendrix. By the late 1970s, he was writing and recording his own material, playing most of the instruments himself.

His 1979 album 'Purple Rain' became a massive hit, with the title track turning into an anthem. The album's success came with a film of the same name. Around that time, he worked with a band called The Revolution, which included Wendy Melvoin on guitar and Lisa Coleman on keyboards. Songs like '1999,' 'Little Red Corvette,' and 'Kiss' showed his knack for blending funk, rock, and pop into something that didn't sound like anyone else.

In the 1990s, he changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol for a while, which confused some fans but felt consistent with his approach to his work. He kept recording steadily, putting out albums like 'Sign o' the Times' and 'The Black Album,' and later tracks like 'The Most Beautiful Girl In The World.' He died in 2016, leaving behind a large catalog of music that still gets played.
