Projeto 9 formed in São Paulo in 2003 around vocalist and guitarist André Abujamra, with Fernando Magalhães on bass, Marcelo Peregrino on guitar, and Zé Nigro on drums. Their sound mixed rock and funk with some experimental touches, which found an audience in Brazil's underground scene.
In 2008 they put out their self-titled debut album, and the single "Fora de Alcance" became a hit that brought them wider attention. The band's lineup shifted over the following years, with Peregrino and Nigro leaving in 2010, replaced by Thiago Pethit and Doni Azevedo, and Magalhães departing in 2012, with Igor Cavalera taking over on bass.
