Gary Puckett & The Union Gap formed in 1967 with guitarist Kerry Chater, keyboardist Gary 'Kermit' Johnson, bassist Paul Curtis, and drummer Dwight Bement. Their debut album 'Woman, Woman' came out the following year, anchored by the title track that became their biggest hit. That song, along with others like 'Lady Willpower' and 'Don't Give In To Him,' gave them a run of late-60s pop success built around Puckett's earnest vocal style.
Their original bassist Paul Curtis left early on and was replaced by Dennis Keller. The group recorded for Columbia Records and put out several albums through the early 1970s, including 'Young Girl' and a live album. They had a particular knack for dramatic, story-driven ballads that connected with radio audiences of the time.
After their initial run, the band's activity slowed. Gary Puckett continued to perform over the decades, often revisiting those late-60s hits that remain his most recognizable work. Songs like 'Woman, Woman' and 'Let's Give Adam and Eve Another Chance' still turn up on oldies playlists and compilation albums.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
