Editor's note

Purple Rain's quiet, morning-after songs

A songwriter who works in the space between waking and remembering.

If you only hear one, make it 'Waking Up'. It's the blueprint for the whole thing.

The songs are small and specific, built around the feeling of a new day arriving. 'Waking Up' is the clearest example, a track about the slow return to consciousness after something has ended. There's a video for it, which helps ground that hazy mood in something visual.

The catalog is brief, just three songs. They seem to orbit a similar emotional state, from 'Waking Up' to 'New World' to 'Bird'.

Purple Rain was a Minneapolis band formed in 1978 around Prince, who handled lead vocals and guitar. The original lineup included André Cymone on bass, Matt Fink on keyboards, and Bobby Z. on drums. Their self-titled debut came out that same year, but it was the 1979 album 'Prince' that brought wider attention with songs like 'I Wanna Be Your Lover' and 'Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?'

In 1984, the band released the album 'Purple Rain,' which featured the title track that won an Academy Award for Best Original Song. That record also included 'When Doves Cry' and 'Let's Go Crazy.' Over time, the group's membership shifted, with figures like Lisa Coleman, Wendy Melvoin, Sheila E., and Michael Bland coming through while Prince remained the central figure.

Prince's stage presence and lyrics sometimes drew criticism from certain quarters, and there were occasional legal matters involving copyright and label disputes.
