Pylon formed in Athens, Georgia in the late 1970s, with Vanessa Briscoe Hay on vocals, Randy Bewley on guitar, Michael Lachowski on bass, and Curtis Crowe on drums. Their debut album 'Gyrate' came out in 1980 and included the song 'A Walk Through Wonderland,' which became something of a calling card for the band's atmospheric post-punk sound.
They released 'Chomp' in 1983 and 'Chain' in 1991, with a compilation called 'Pure' following in 1995. The band's catalog includes other tracks like 'An Angel Tale' and 'DeadLove,' but they never aimed for commercial radio play and often seemed content to operate at the edges of the scene.
Pylon disbanded in 1989, though they reunited for some shows in 2014. Michael Lachowski died in 1993. Their music, spare and rhythmic with Hay's distinctive vocals floating over the top, has been mentioned as an influence on other Athens bands and a few later alternative acts, but they mostly just made the records they wanted to make.
