Background notes

Archive material and source history

Qftry was a Scottish band that formed in Edinburgh in the late 1990s. Their lineup included Ewan MacLeod on vocals and guitar, Ross Campbell on bass, Chris Murphy on drums, and Annabel Gordon on keyboards. They worked with traditional Scottish music as their starting point.

In 2002, their cover of "Scotland the Brave" became widely known in Scotland. The song topped the Scottish charts and found a regular place at sporting events and cultural gatherings. That version remains their most recognized recording.

The band faced difficulties after keyboardist Annabel Gordon died in 2005. They released albums like "The Heart of Scotland" in 2004 and "The Gathering" in 2008, but Gordon's absence was felt. In 2012, they had a public dispute with another Scottish group over the use of "Scotland the Brave."
