Qi Negativo

Qi Negativo formed in Lisbon in 1978, with brothers João and Mário Brandão, bassist Francisco "Chico" Rebelo, and drummer Rodrigo "Rod" Rodrigues. They played a raw, energetic style of punk rock that stood out in Portugal's late-70s underground. Their song "Último Lugar" became a rallying cry for people who felt left behind, giving voice to a particular kind of frustration.

Their music often carried a sharp social edge, written during a period when Portugal was still processing the end of decades of authoritarian rule. They released albums like "Punk Rock em Portugal" in 1980 and "Razões" in 1982, which blended the aggression of punk with textures from Portuguese folk traditions. This gave their sound a local character that set them apart from other punk acts.

While they faced resistance from a conservative society that wasn't ready for their sound, they managed to build a following. The band's lineup saw some changes, with Chico Rebelo joining in 1980. Their recordings from that era remain touchstones for anyone interested in how punk took root outside its usual English-speaking centers.
