Qori Waraca de Canas formed in 1987 in the village of Canas in the Peruvian Andes. The name means "Golden Spear" in Quechua. They play traditional Andean instruments like panpipes, charangos, and Andean drums.
Their song "Mentira" appeared on their 1998 album of the same name. The track became popular in Peru, with lyrics that touch on love and life in the mountains.
Some traditionalists criticized the band for mixing contemporary elements with Andean music. They faced the usual financial challenges of working as musicians in a developing country.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
