Quails formed as a trio in Los Angeles around 2013, with Jackson Bertsch on vocals and guitar, Benny Boeldt on bass, and Mick Malinowski on drums. They self-released their debut EP 'Arrows' in 2014, which had an indie rock sound with folk and dreamy pop touches.
In 2015, they signed with Glassnote Records and put out their first album 'Stardust and Shadows.' The single 'High Hopes' came out in 2016 and became their biggest song, connecting with listeners in several countries. After that, they released two more albums: 'The Long Run' in 2018 and 'Dreamworld' in 2021.
The band has toured in North America, Europe, and Asia. They've worked with other artists like Phoebe Bridgers and Bon Iver. In 2018, there were some questions about similarities in 'High Hopes,' but Quails said any resemblance was coincidental.
