Quantic Soul Orchestra is a project led by Will Holland that started around 2005. Holland brought together musicians to explore a mix of soul, jazz, funk, and Latin rhythms, moving away from his earlier electronic work. Their first album, 'An Announcement to Answer,' set the tone with soul vocals over driving grooves.
Later records like 'Tropidelico' and 'Magnetica' added more colors to the palette, touching on Afrobeat, cumbia, and Peruvian folk sounds. The lineup has shifted over time, with players like saxophonist Deric Dickens and vocalist Alice Russell appearing as core members. They've also worked with singers such as José James and Nidia Góngora.
One of their better-known tracks is 'Hold It Down,' which became something of a signature piece. In 2017, the group faced criticism for using a sample from a traditional Peruvian song without proper permission. They apologized and worked with the original artist to sort it out.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
