Quantum Jump formed in Los Angeles in the late 1970s with Sammy Hagar on vocals, Neal Schon on guitar, Kenny Aaronson on bass, and Gary Pihl on drums. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1976, but it was their second album three years later that caught people's attention. The title track "Barracuda" became their biggest hit, with Hagar's vocals and Schon's guitar work giving it a hard rock edge that got radio play.
That song's success brought some unwanted attention too. When they performed "Barracuda" on the TV show Solid Gold in 1980, some viewers complained about the lyrics. Hagar had a reputation for being outspoken, which didn't help matters.
By the mid-80s, the lineup had changed. Hagar left in 1985 to focus on his solo career, and Schon and Aaronson had already moved on a few years earlier. They released two more albums before wrapping things up. Besides "Barracuda," songs like "Over Rio" and "The Lone Ranger" show what they were doing in those later years.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
