Quar' de Mata formed in São Paulo in 1997 around brothers Rodrigo and Rogério Guimarães, with bassist Fábio Mustafá and drummer Wallace Costa. Their debut album 'Submerso' arrived in 1999, followed by releases like 'Aurora' in 2002 and 'A Estrada Que Não Leva a Lugar Nenhum' in 2005. The band's name translates to 'quarter of the forest,' which hints at the natural imagery in some of their work.
Songs like 'Dentro do Sol' and 'Morrer de Carnaval' show their blend of rock with ethereal textures. They maintained a steady output through the 2000s with albums including 'Astral' in 2008 and 'As Quatro Estações' in 2011. The core trio of the Guimarães brothers and Fábio Mustafá remained constant through most of their run, though drummers changed over time.
Their music often leans toward the introspective, with lyrics that touch on philosophical themes. Tracks such as 'Riso de Lua' and 'Coração Estrambelhado' reflect this tendency. While they developed a dedicated following in Brazilian rock circles, their style stayed somewhat outside mainstream conventions.
After Fábio Mustafá's departure in 2019, bassist Rodrigo Lima joined the lineup. The band has continued performing live, drawing on material from across their catalog.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
