Quartel formed in São Paulo in 1990 with Quito Ribeiro on vocals and guitar, Ricardo Silveira on keyboards, Aloysio Letra on bass, and Beto Montag on drums. They put out their first album in 1993 and kept recording through the next two decades, releasing records like 'Contos Modernos' in 1998 and 'Música Urbana' in 2008.
Their 2011 album 'Audaz Comunicante' included a title track that became known for its political lyrics, which criticized government censorship in Brazil. The song turned into something of an anthem around those themes.
They had been playing a mix of samba, jazz, and funk since the beginning, and by 2011 they had been at it for over twenty years.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
