Quarto36 formed in 2011 in Belo Horizonte, with Maycon Santos on vocals and guitar, Kelson Cavalcante on guitar and vocals, João Lucas on bass, and Rafael Neves on drums. They took their name from the small room in a community center where they rehearsed. Their music pulls from rock, funk, and hip-hop, and they've often written about their working-class neighborhood.
In 2015, their song "13 de Março" got attention for its direct lyrics about police brutality and inequality. It became a viral hit in Brazil. Other tracks like "Quanto Tempo Mais?" and "Tudo tem um fim" show their style of blending raw energy with social themes.
Their live shows are known for being intense and emotional, which has built them a dedicated following. They've also faced criticism for being too confrontational, especially after a 2017 festival performance where Santos openly criticized then-President Michel Temer. The band hasn't backed down from that stance.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
